What semi-private personal training actually is

Up to six people train at the same time, each on a programme written for them, with one coach on the floor for the whole hour. It is not a class, because nobody is following along. It is not one-to-one, because the coach is not standing over you counting.

The brief

Who this is for

Most people arrive having tried both ends of this. A class, where you keep up or you do not, and nobody notices which. Or one-to-one, which worked and then cost more than it was worth week after week.

Semi-private is the format in between, and it is not a compromise. Six different programmes running at once means the coach is watching technique rather than counting reps at you, and it means you are never the only person in the room.

Classes have left you either bored or out of your depth, sometimes in the same hour.
One-to-one worked, and then the invoice stopped making sense.
You want to be coached, not counted at, and not watched the entire time either.

How it runs

How six different programmes run at once

Everyone arrives to their own session already written. The coach moves between six people, correcting what needs correcting, and nobody waits for the group. The room is busy and quiet at the same time, which surprises most people on day one.

Six programmes, six people, one coach. Never a seventh.
Your session is written before you arrive and adjusted while you are in it.
No music, no mirrors, no leaderboard, nothing to keep up with.
Afterwards

Why the number six matters

Beyond six, a coach stops coaching and starts supervising. Below three, the room goes quiet and the cost climbs. Six is the point where you get corrected properly and still have people around you, and it is the whole reason this format works when classes did not.

Not only have I seen amazing physical results - I am stronger and leaner, but my energy levels have also soared. The supportive community here makes every workout fun, and I genuinely look forward to coming in.

As someone who has never consistently exercised, been very intimidated and not confident about going to a gym her whole life... I haven't missed a single week.

During my first workout at Thrive, I lost my balance and fell. Rather than embarrassment, the three other people there shared they had all fallen at the beginning.

I'm a 65 year old woman who, for the last 10 years or so, was exercising mainly by walking... Brian, Stephanie and Luis are amazing. They know their stuff inside out.

Is this just a small group class?

No, and the difference is the whole thing. In a class everybody does the same movements at the same time. Here, six people are doing six different sessions, so there is nothing to follow and nothing to fall behind.

What does semi-private personal training cost in Toronto?

Ours starts at $225 biweekly plus HST for nine sessions a month, rising to $425 for eighteen. One-to-one in Toronto typically runs $90 to $150 a session, so the arithmetic is the point of the format.

Will the coach actually watch me?

More than in one-to-one, oddly. A coach standing over one person spends most of the hour counting. A coach with six spends it looking at technique, because that is the only thing worth their attention.

What if I am much less fit than the others?

Nobody is doing what you are doing, so there is nothing to compare. That is not a reassurance we invented for the website - it is the mechanical consequence of six different programmes.

Can I come with a friend or my partner?

Yes, and plenty do. You will be in the same room at the same time on completely different sessions, which tends to work better than trying to train together.

How do I try it?

A private Body Reset Baseline first. Thirty minutes, one to one, no charge, and nothing to buy at the end of it.
